Level 1

KWL (Levels 1 and 3)

Add your thoughts using the KWL approach. Thinking about Game Mechanics, Games-Based Learning or gamification.....

K = What do you know?
  • I don't know much about this area except that I have seen it mentioned in the media and when I've glanced at professional development articles it seems interesting

W = What do you want to learn?
  • I'd like to understand more about gaming within the field of education, what the research says about it and how I may be able to implement these ideas to improve the learning of my students

L = What have you learned? (we'll do this last one later)
  • I have learnt a lot about the elements of gaming and the potential benefits. I like that information is research-based as this always increases my confidence in the decision making process. I also reminded of the importance of the consideration made regarding extrinsic and intrinsic motivation

Reflection

I'm enjoying learning more about this. I'm excited about what ideas I may be able to use with my students, particularly my Year 12 Chemistry class.

Level 2

Where do I start?

Identify some learning outcomes that you will be visiting with your students in upcoming lessons. Note down here some ways they might benefit from gamification.

I would like to begin using gaming to revise topics which we have already studied - Production of Materials and The Acidic Environment. I think the students would enjoy both the sense of achievement they will experience and the competitiveness of it also.

Observe and reflect
After playing a game what are your personal thoughts about the design and elements involved and how any of these could help you in thinking about doing the same in a learning activity?

It is important for it to be a lot of fun, easy to learn at the beginning and for their to be a sense of mastery as levels get more difficult

Level 3

Premiers Reading Challenge Reflection

In the rules section of the Premiers Reading Challenge it says:

"6a. K-2 students, you can read books or have them read to you in your home language.

6b. 3-4, 5-6, 7-9 students, you must read all PRC books in English. You may read Personal Choice books in your home language. "

The choice which the students have is great. There are different degrees of difficulty and they also receive an award at the end.

You Try/ A final reflection

Lesson Outcomes - To revise Production of Materials and Acidic Environment with my Year 12 Chemistry class in a fun and meaningful way

Description of your audience - I have five year 12 students who are all boys aged between 17-18 years. They are international students and they all enjoy playing computer games

Time constraints - 2 lessons

Game elements - We are going to play a game of "who wants to be a millionaire". I found the template and have written the 15 questions which progressively increase in difficulty. The winner receives a bar of chocolate and title of chemistry champion

Fun check - the boys had a great time and asked if we could play it again. I will modify it also so that bonus points may be given for a more detailed response rather than just the multiple choice concept
